Hi Michael,
I am posting this from my Mac...
your blog looks GOOD!
Carol
This is a test from my computer on the school network. Testing 1 2 3 4
Ken
..so why can Ken go to the site? And, I cannot.
.
I found most of the In-service today informative.
I especially liked Read 180 because I had not heard of it before and it sounds like it is a wonderful program.
I use the Real CSI and the Unraavel when I work with my students.
I liked the Reading 180 the best because I had wanted to know what it was about.... The others were repetitious for me.
Today's exercises were very informative and interesting. I use UNRAAVEL constantly and find that it truly makes a difference in the reading strategies and comprehension levels of students. I found the exercises on Fluency very interesting. The fluency exercises used helped to place us in the minds of the "needy" students.
All the presentations were good. I think that the information gained can help in developing new curriculum.
The Unraavel presentation was very useful and a nice refresher. I found it interesting to find how the math teachers are approaching word problems. Fluency and Read 180 were also helpful presentations. Always good to remind ourselves what our students are going through.
Today's in-service was valuable in terms of making sure our students can read and comprehend what they are reading.
The most helpful workshops were the CSI and UNRAAVEL.
I enjoyed today's in-service thoroughly! SHALOM!
I founded most usefull lerning is session 3 and 4.
I found fluency interesting, and agree that students can be overwelmed without it.
I would use fluency exercizez in combination with an unravelexercize.
The workshop was incredibly fascinating and the instructors were insightful and pleasant. The favorite strategy was "The Real CSI." This starategy offers the most flexibilty in cognitive learning in all content areas. Thank you Greater Lowell Workshop Team.
All of the presenters were informative. I think the Read 180 will be beneficial to the students. However, it was stressed that the program needs to be followed. How will that be accomplished if we do not have 90 minute blocks?
I thought we did this stuff this year....
How about finding one thing that works and stick with it
I wish we could do some thing different.
no more unraavels
some what helpful. I enjoyed learning about the new Read 180 program that is going to be a part of the schools curriculum. It seems very interesting
I found the unravel workshop helpful. I wish I had access to this at the beginning of the year.
Today was decent!
The sessions were good, but reading still as in years past comes down to vocabulary and practice of reading. Two ingredients many students don't have and don't like to do.
All of the workshops were very interesting. Fluency was interesting. The UNRAAVEL was something that we had done before. CSI with the Math was good!
All presenters were good and informative. I thought 180 was very good and useful for our students. I feel the best help for our students who are behind is summer school.
fluency was informative.
I believe that today was one of the better inservice days. The sessions were short and informative. As far as the most valuable, I'm not sure. I did find the sessions on Fluency and Read 180 because they were new
This afternoon was very interesting.
I was impressed with CSI and fluency.
The workshops were interesting. Especially fluency. I would like to have students share background knowledge about topics with graphic organizers. Creating short and catchy rhymes or visual images to go along with vocabulary would be a help.
I found the real C.S.I. extremely useful and something I will use in my classroom. All the presenters were very knowledgeable and made very professional presentations
1. Today's inservice was well done. I liked having 4 shorter workshops that addressed different areas of reading.
2. As an English teacher, the UNRAAVEL and Fluency workshops were most beneficial to me.
3. I have taught the UNRAAVEL strategy to my students. I use practice exercises to boost up their confidence as well as giving them the needed practice to apply the strategies on the MCAS test.
All the workshops were informative and helpful. It's amazing how problems can be easier solved using logic.
the fluncy portion and the math were very interestig. The unraavel should have actually gone through and did the example.
great job by all the presenters. I thought we were having a raffle today though. I was a little disappointed by that.
I found the CSI interesting. I learned that students do not like to hear the word fraction.
Donna
The strategies are useful, but would appreciate more opportunity to operationalize them in my technical area.
Fluency was interesting. I have been doing these things without realizing it. I have also been using UNRAAVEL since the first inservice with success. I found read 180 to be an advertisement without any practicality for me at this time.
Today's in-service was fine. I will continue to encourage the use of UNRAAVEL. The read 180 program sounds as if it will encourage students to read more effectively.
I FEEL I LOST TIME IN MY LIFE I CANNOT GET BACK. SOME SESSIONS WERE A WASTE OF TIME. UNRAAVEL I USE. I MAY LOOK INTO USING CSI A LITTLE. THEY SHOULD GET SOME FLUENCY BEFORE HIGH SCHOOL. READ 180 WAS A SALES PITCH VIDEO??????
I FEEL I LOST TIME IN MY LIFE I CANNOT GET BACK. SOME SESSIONS WERE A WASTE OF TIME. UNRAAVEL I USE. I MAY LOOK INTO USING CSI A LITTLE. THEY SHOULD GET SOME FLUENCY BEFORE HIGH SCHOOL. READ 180 WAS A SALES PITCH VIDEO??????
Interesting
Thank you
I found the READ180 a nice refresher. I use UNRAAVEL frequently in my classroom and that was a nice review. The math strategy seemed like it would work well if the students memorized the techniques.
The csi and unraavel are the same as before. Good to use in the classroom. Read 180 is a great Idea for the title 1 and sped students. Fluency is something that everyone can use. Good in-service day
Our impression was that this in-service was very enlightening. There were many ideas and strategies and we can take a little bit from each strategy.
WE thought that the workshop on Fluency was the best. It was great to simulate what students' reading experiences feel like.
I found the inservice to be interesting. I like the reading 180, but what about the stdents that are in other grades besides ninth?
I don't understand why only Masonry was the targeted technical program to be targeted for improvement today.
The inservice contained valuable information, but at the same time was too lengthy and needed to be shorter so we could utilize time for other things we need to do.
The in-service gave instructors an opportunity to review reading and math techniques; importance of implementing more reading into our technical areas; as well as math.
I learned about Read 180 which I think would be highly effective with out students. Learning to read, say and do is estimated 90% effective retention. As a professional, our students are adept with this learning style.
I am hopeful to apply more reading in our technology program..at least once a week.
Still unsure about how to answer the inevitable question from students, "Why are there two A's in Unravel?" But other than that, in-sevice was informative and all of the presenters were excellent. read 180 seems like a really good program.
Fluency was an interesting presentation, and READ 180 sounds impressive, I hope it works as well as advertised.
REAL CSI is probably the one initiative I may try with math questions in my related
Overall I enjoyed this in-service. I was very interested in the REAL CSI because I'm a math teacher. I also can see many applications to the shop math utilizing CSI. All presenters were well prepared and made it informative.
The stategies I will use include the real csi and Unraavel. Currently I already use unraavel.I want to collect more reading materials to use to develop these activities.I will try to incorporate the real csi into my math moments every day. Stacey was very helpful-Thanks
This was actually an in-service that I enjoyed. I am new and will begin using the UNRAVEL program in my technical classes. My favorite part of today's inservice was learning about Real CSI. I am trying to use embedded academics (math) in my tech area and find that the sped students struggle. I will take some ideas (like math graphic organizers) and use them in my lessons. Send more CSI math in-services this way!
I like the Real CSI for its math component. It will help me add math problems in the shop on a daily basis.
1. All presenters did a fine job. My overall impression is that these tactics are useful to a certain percentage of our population and it was good see things from the perspective of the presenters. At this stage in my teaching career, however, I find much of the information redundant and intended to boost MCAS scores rather than increase learning.
2. I found the Fluency and Read 180 portions most interesting. I wish the Read 180 video showed more of how the program works rather than provide testimonials on what a wonderful program it is.
3. Quite frankly, most of these strategies have been part of my job for more than three decades.
As a math teacher I found the real CSI veryinformative.I found the workshop excellent and so was the presenter.
The in-service was informative. I have been to several of thes in the past. t is always good to review.Unravel is the teaching tool I find to be of the most benifit to my students at this time.Using the forms with the unravel .
I found this inservice important in that it re-reminds instructors the process of Unraavel and how simple it can be to implement in our classrooms with great benefit.
Although we had an inservice prior on this topic, instructors are learners also. As with anything, the more we see it, hear it, say it, the more likely we are to do it!
Super.
I found most of the In-service productive.
Read 180 sounds like a great program.
I use Unraavel when I work with my students.
Some of the workshops were better then others/more useful
2) UNraavel had been done before and was not knew or useful
Fluency was useful
Read 180 was good to find out what people were doing
REAL CSI was not useful
3. I will read out load and have students follow along and fill in the words
Real CSI was very informative. It gave us a different point of view on solving problems.
On a scale of 2-3 ....I give it a 3.
The math was very good
Mike, the in-service was great. I loved the format. Short presentations in small groups are very interesting and easy to follow. Nice presentation yesterday also. Fluency was the most helpful because it reminds me to go over vocabulary and background information before reading and lecturing on a subject. The way to incorporate these strategies is to break the work down into steps to make sure my students understand the assignment.
I found the fluency section to be the most interesting.
I thought today was a success. Although I cannot use the REAL CSI, I thought that was most impressive session. I will continue to utilize UNRAVEL as strategy to implement when reading the text or selected readings.
Thanks
Fluency was pretty good but Lappin ate all the candy. He didn't leave any for Roberta or me. I would encourage my students to actually read rather then unravel. Bob Dick and Eric Burgess were terrific. How much does the Reading 180 software cost? --a bazillion?
Although I was familiar with Unravel, I wasn't aware of the documents out on the web. I checked them out and was really impressed. I plan to use them in the future!!!! The fluency session was extremely helpful in the respect that the examples provided made you aware of how some students might struggle. I also enjoyed learning about Read180 and hope to learn more about it in the future!!!!!
I thought the read180 was a great idea. I hope it works out for our students.
I thought all the presentations were helpful. FLUENCY had the most helpful ideas for me to pass on to my students. I believe the READ 180 program will be helpful to mainstream and well as special ed students.
I found the workshops to be informational but as usual they are not long enough to get an apreciation of the subject matter. There is too much material for little time
alright
fluency
I would like to try to read to the students and have them fill in the blank, therefore, testing their fluency.
your welcome
I have so much content material to teach, I find it difficult to understand how I can create time for one more technique.
Although I'm sure that each technique is beneficial, aside from creating another period to provide students the opportunity to focus on working these strategies I can not see how we can create time. Lower current requirements, and it can be done.
Hello,
I am a new teacher here and I finally learned what "UNRAAVEL" stands for. I think it is a great concept and wonder when and if I am supposed to teach it in my classroom. I also really like the READ180. I think it is a wonderful program and can see why students would like it and feel enpowered by it. Wouldn't it be nice if all classrooms had a panel of computers so that we could use the 20/20/10 timesharing idea. 20 minutes of self-computer time, 20 minutes of time with the teacher (lesson) and 10 minutes to summarize to the class as a whole. Wouldn't it be great if they had software for all subjects and not just for reading?
Two of the sessions were interesting and engaging; the other tow were not useful.
Textbooks need to have more multi-step MCAS problems in them.
I didn't really see the point of repeating a lot of what we have explored in past inservices until Kathy Murphy, who was present in one of the sessions explained the importance of giving the type of student who attends ours school a sense of consistency in instruction which is accomplished when all instructors follow the same or similiar models.
I have an issue with the reading program in that I have read that the best indicator of a student willingness or ability to read is whether or not the parents read. So far I have heard nothing about the home/school link and involving parents in our literacy efforts.
Thought the in-service worked out well. As a presenter, I got alot of positve feedback from everyone and found that everybody was attentive and interested.
OH YEAH !!!
ME AND THE BOYS IN SECTOR - G WILL
BE AT WARP SPEED BY NEXT WEEK.
HEY RODGER HOW DO I GET OUT OF THIS ???
T
I found the session on fluency to be the most interesting. I felt that it offered some great suggestions for the classroom that can easily be adapted to a variety of subject matter.
unravel I engage in this process while working in shop area to make a point that important
Real CSI was the most useful, since I teach math.I use a form of this when I model word problems but
I also encourage my students to draw pictures when helpful.
I liked the reading 180 and the Real CSI. When they talked obout changing how we presented math expresion I think it will be a problem because no one in the trade will understand what they are talking about
I thought that the unit on fluency was especially useful. I have been using UNRAAVEL a little and find that the fluency is very good. I will give CSI and read 180 a try! Definitely!!
1.)My overall impression of today's sessions was that there didn't seem to be any cohesiveness in the way the sessions were compartmentalized. I would have preferred fewer sessions of a longer duration with some hands-on workshopping and brain-storming.
2.) The Read 180 was interesting, but we could have done without the first 7-8 minutes of testimonials and spent more time on the gist of the video. The school only owns a limited amount of the Read 180 software programs, so I'm not sure how valuable it is to be informed about a teaching tool that is not available to the entire faculty.
I found the fluency part of the inservice most interesting and informative. Sometimes even though I'm in a classroom most of the day I don't always remember how hard of a time some students have with reading.
I enjoyed Claire Toohey's presentation on Fluency. Actually, all of the presenters gave a fresh overview of their topics-I've seen the material before in some cases, but it's good to refresh the memory. All in all, I'd say it was a half day well spent...for a change.
Very interesting. Amazing to see the difficulties that many of our students have to overcome. I suggested that the unraavel exercises be available on the student intranet as well as on the admin doc. for teachers. Often students have a few minutes left at the end of class and this time could be utilized working on unraavel exercises.
1. I thought todays inservice would have been better spent teaching students, not teachers. 2. I didnt find any of them useful to my technical teaching.
3. If I was an academic teacher, I might use these.
4. Your welcome
1.Overall I found todays's In Service the most in formative of all to date.
2.Fluency.
I believe that todays inservice was very good. The sessions were short and informative. As far as the most valuable, I'm not sure. I did learn from the sessions on REAL CSI and Read 180 because they are such necessary tools for our population of student.
Fluency was an eye-opener. We already unraaveled..not necessary for everyone to do it again. The REAL CSI is still contrived... Read 180 was a commercial.. Overall it is nice to know what is going on in the building.
I will use the Oral Cloze technique in my classroom to ensure students are engaged. In addition, I will continue to use unravel reading activities in my class.
Overall I think the presentations were useful and informative. I really liked the Fluency presentation. It made me realize what these students go through when trying to read.
Being in the math department, I would use the Real CSI strategy in my classroom.
Great Job everyone!!!
1) Very informative, it is nice to have more tools to work with.
2)Real CSI I think I will be able to use more in my related class trying to explain some of my more difficult math estimating questions.
3)I would try to use one of my estimating questions first and bring it to Miss O'keefe to see if I set it up correctly and then present it to the class.
4) Your welcome
Of all the demonstrations, I found UNRAAVEL to be the most useful. I can see it being a program that I can work into my lessons in some fashion. Dan Hamel did a great job with the presentation.
On another note, I think a coffee station set up in the mall would be a great perk for sitting in on the sessions.
Thanks -
I found today to be interesting and informative
ok
real CSI opposed to CSI Miami
I think giving them the steps in the real CSI would help tremendously with math problems in my class.
your welcome
I thought that all of the presentations were very informative an well done. I am looking forward to utilizing the strategies in class. I currently use UNRAAVEL and the students seem to be picking it up and doing very well with it. Thank you!
only useful session was fluency. it was interesting to see how the mind of a poor reader may operate. these strategies may have new acronyms but they have been around for years. all accomplished teachers use them.
The UNRAAVEL workshop was a repeat from past workshops. The Read 180 appears to be worthwhile. Would prefer to use these early release days for more productive activities.
The fluency workshop was the most beneficial to me.
Reading over unravel.
Let's do something NEW!
I THINK IT WAS A USEFUL IN-SERVICE FOR ALL. I THINK IT WOULD BE GREAT TO REVISIT THE READ 180 PROGRAM AND SEE HOW IT IS WORKING.OUR KIDS ARE WORTH EVERY CENT THAT GOES INTO THIS PROGRAM!
#1 the information shared was very good. we are in the same boat with student expectation and achievement. Is the ripple effect moving to the lower grades so we can expect better prepared students or do we bear the brunt of their lack of skills?
#2 Fluency and Read 180
#3 I teach these strategies through reading the chapter ,writing out the questions and answering them. Also running these chapters on computer, multiple choice, fill in the blank,true/false and speed test summary, with games for working knowledge. We also read new automotive articles daily. Thanks Arty Cornellier
1. good to revisit strategies to refresh the memory.
2. Fluency session was the most valuable. Put you in situations that are students are in every day.
3. Strategies are currently being used in class. Plan on using the oral cloze.
I learned today that even if you cant park a car you can unravel and place yourself at 180.
thank you
1. Quite informative
2. Real CSI
3. Integrate CSI with part of our technical curriculum
4.Your Welcome
Read 180 - sales pitch. Unfortunately this program will benefit only the low level readers. What about everyone else? Hopefully today will be the last time we have to hear about UNRAAVEL. Reading over UNRAAVEL! How will UNRAAVEL help kids answer the tough technical MCAS questions? Today's presenters did an awesome job. I did gain some useful strategies that I will implement in my classroom.
1) Please share your overall impressions of today's In-Service.
It is good to have a chance to revisit thing from last year that you might not had a chance to implement.
2) Which of today's sessions did you find most valuable to your teaching? Explain Why?
They were all good. I likes Fluency, but UNRAAVEL is something I am going to do this year.
3) Briefly explain how you would teach the strategies you learned today in the classroom?
CSI is a mini UNRAAVEL for each question.
Good repeat of some and interesting introductions to "new" information.
Probably Fluency -- good reminder of what our teaching style probably should be -- if only our classes were not so heterogeneously mixed.
Working that out! Takes some planning to be able to keep track of upwards of 25 and use separate strategies for perhaps four different groups and get it accomplished in 44 (minus greeting, pre dismissal, attendance, homework assignment, etc.) minutes.
You are welcome
We are required to review basic Math as part of shop instruction.
There are many different ways to work with percentages, fractions, etc.
I would like to have material that demonstrates GLTHS Math department's approach to the basics. I am concerned that when I teach methods that I am familiar with, I am comfusing the students, rather than helping them.
Overall, today's in-service was pretty interesting. I found REAL CSI to be the most helpful. We already do UNRAAVELs often, Read 180, seemed like an infomercial. I can use the information I learned in REAL CSI immediatly.
I enjoyed the information that was presented in session 1,2,and three.
I hope to implement these in the coming weeks.
I was very pleased with everyone in my groups. Everyone seemed very willing to listen and learn about REALCSI strategy. This will help all students become proficient in open-response questions. Thank You.
Bob Dick
Interesting to know.
